How to use laser technology in the industrial field

There are more and more applications in the industrial and medical fields involving the use of a laser, thanks to which particularly appreciable results are obtained.

“We believe that the future will see this technology increasingly established which, with its short adaptation times to different production needs and its capacity for customisation, is well suited to following this trend”.

What is laser technology?

L.A.S.E.R. technology (Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation), commonly called “laser”, allows the creation of devices capable of emitting a coherent beam of light in space (allowing collimation) and in time so that the emission spectrum is very narrow (monochromaticity) by means of optical amplification based on a process of stimulated emission of electromagnetic radiation.

Laser application fields

The main uses of the laser are linked to the properties of monochromaticity, collimation, directionality and divergence of the beam; these are the characteristics getting it unique compared to other physical agents. In the industrial sector, Brentech use lasers in welding, cutting, marking, ablation and surface texturing processes, obtaining surprising results.

How Brentech exploits the potential of the laser

The Brentech mechanical design studio of Schio, Vicenza has developed and manufactured several mechanical equipment and special machines in the industrial field by using laser technology, making as well a TSL laser safety technician available to the customer. This is an indispensable expert for the company in case the need arises to define and verify the risks and safety aspects of self-built or purchased machines using this technology.

The importance of the TSL laser safety technician

According to Legislative Decree 81/80, when class 3B or 4 lasers are present, therefore with installed power exceeding 0.5 W, the role of the TSL laser safety technician is mandatory for the company using the laser itself.

The TSL laser safety technician has the task:

  • to support the customer in the choice of the laser machine best suited to his needs and in defining the appropriate active and passive protection measures;
  • to evaluate risks and define operating procedures;
  • to transfer knowledge and training to the staff working with lasers
  • to size the collective and individual protective devices for the eyes, skin, etc.

It is important to underline that in the presence of laser technologies with CE marking, the risk assessment must be carried out by a TSL laser safety technician at least every four years.
